Channel 4 is working to improve the ratings for its dramatic shows. It recently hired Gub Neal to head the division. C4 has also increased this division's budget to #43 million. Neal has stated his intention to air one new show a week. One psychological dramas about gays in mental hospitals has already created something of a controversy even before being shown. Neal points out his intention to create a stamp for C4's dramas. To this end, he has financed independant film makers.

Channel 4 International's new managing director, Bernard MacLeod, aims to boost programme rights activity for Channel 4 in the UK and abroad. MacLeod replaced Colin Leventhal in July 1998, following a restructuring of commercial operations. Aged only 32, MacLeod has to date enjoyed a distinguished career in television sales, with management positions held at Telso, Granada International, and Time Life Television and Video.
