Postal bid under way for hit Celador format

Celador Productions intends to sell the international format rights to ITV's Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, after receiving interest from up to 45 companies. The company, which asked interested parties to submit written proposals, expressed that finance is not the necessarily main criterion for its decision, but also the effort that will be poured into the show. The show, which is being targeted by such groups as Pearson TV International and Endemol Entertainment, could entirely go to a large corporation with several productions bases internationally or to several smaller companies.

Carlton TV's head of children's programs, Michael Forte, has been designated to lead the station's launching of Carlton Kids digital channel on Nov. 15, 1998. Prior to a six-year stint at Carlton, the 40-million-pound-sterling-a-year creator of children's shows, Forte had worked at ITV and was accepted on second try as floor manager of BBC after undergoing an editor's training in Ealing. Known for his ability with words, Forte has lined up an On Digital service that not only seeks to educate but most importantly to entertain children.

ITV has the best children's schedule, according to Michael Forte, head of children's programmes at Carlton TV, which is the largest supplier of children's programmes to ITV. He hopes that his department will eventually be able to make feature films, ideally for both cinema and television. He feels that the UK has been overwhelmed with films from the US and that action should now be taken against this trend. He believes that the narrative form is the most successful approach to attracting children and retaining their interest.
