Ready to rock
Article Abstract:
The UK Radio Authority has awarded the last FM radio broadcasting licence for London, England, to XFM, which was created in 1992 by Sammy Jacob and Chris Parry. The company already has an established infrastructure, and should therefore be in a position to being broadcasting as early as Sep 1997. The launch will receive investment of up to 3 million pounds sterling from shareholders which include Harvey Goldsmith and CLT UK Radio. The station will play music which is less than three months old, and will also seek new musical talent.

Issuing licences under fire
Article Abstract:
The UK Radio Authority has acted in accordance with the 1990 Broadcasting Act when deciding on the 71 new local and regional licences, three national licences and 1,500 restricted service licences which it has awarded since 1991. This legislation obliges the Radio Authority to extend choice and diversity, and this inevitably means that its decisions will be controversial. However, some observers feel that it is now making too many wrong decisions.
