Going the distance
Article Abstract:
ITV has relied increasingly heavily over recent years on drama programmes as a way of boosting audience levels. This has attracted negative comment from the Independent Television Commission. Research undertaken by Barb indicates that drama is in fact not always very successful in attracting and retaining audiences. For both ITV and the BBC, audience levels for the second run of a drama series are generally lower than for the first run. This means that there is a very strong case for ITV diversifying its output.

A deal too far?
Article Abstract:
The strategic partnership between BBC Production and BBC Broadcast is seen as a major policy shift by the independent producers' association Pact, which is seeking legal advice on the anticompetitive nature of the deal. Under the new arrangement, in-house producers will be allocated at least 60% of non-news programming spend for 1998/99. The BBC has told Pact that the changes will not alter the existing programme balance.
