ITV hikes budget to take on Sky One

ITV is spending upwards of [pounds sterling]40 million on special programs and spinoffs, including hot US programs like The Contender, a boxing series starring Sylvester Stallone, and launching new channels ITV 3 and ITV 4 targeting women. These efforts are aimed at pushing ITV into the top spot ahead of Sky Sports One and Sky One, estimating gross advertising revenues from the digital channels to cross [pounds sterling]150 million by 2007. The aim is for ITV 3 to reach the top 15 and top 10 channel slots in the next two years.

The digital shakedown
Article Abstract:
Digital TV, though at the beginning thought to be a breakthrough in the UK, has been progressively losing profits. Although digital viewing has a share of 20 per cent plus, many individual channels are not getting enough audience viewing. The major companies being affected by this downturn are CFN, Sky Digital, and BSkyB.

The ratings for ITV's late network news are considerably low in Sky Digital homes.Despite it being an election year, this week the 10.30pm ITV News had audiences between 2 million and 3 million, a drop of more than 40% as compared to the 5 million plus audience for the late night news in 2001 election year.
