In the money
Article Abstract:
British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Ltd.'s finances have always been thought to be in an unhealthy state because of inefficient management and mounting bureaucracy. However, the sale of its transmission network and advanced borrowings against licence fees have helped it accrue a war-chest of 520 million pounds sterling, compared with borrowings of almost 200 million pounds sterling in 1993. The BBC's chairman Sir Christopher Bland has announced plans to invest around 9%/y of the corporation's licence fee income to 2001 in installing its digital infrastructure.

Hard news
Article Abstract:
A deal with ITV under which ITN will receive 5 million pounds sterling less for supplying news to ITV in 1997 than in 1996 will call into question ITN's financial stability. The situation will become even more difficult in 1998, when a five-year deal worth around 40 million pounds sterling will come into effect. Observers are now considering how ITN will cope with a significantly reduced budget. Some believe that redundancies and restructuring will be inevitable.
