MTV enters radio with Unique deal
Article Abstract:
MTV Europe broadens its radio production by signing a 60-40 joint-venture deal with Unique Broadcasting, one of the leading independent radio producers in the UK. The MTV Europe-dominated deal to be known as MTV Radio Productions or MTVRP, aims to offer music-based programmes for overseas radio stations. MTVRP will be staffed by 20 people and led by a yet to be named managing editor, plus MTV Europe New Business Development Head Malcolm McKenzie as chairman. Unique CEO Simon Cole said the deal provides his firm access to a music market and fill a gap in its portfolio.

New editor Thomas aims to 'freshen up' Kilroy show
Article Abstract:
Independent Image, producer of the BBC 1 daytime talk show "Kilroy," has made the first move in a major restructuring of the show with the designation of Carrie Thomas as new editor. Thomas, who has spent over 20 years in the business as producer/director, will take control of "Kilroy" effective Aug. 1, 1998. Some of the revisions to be made in the show include using more of "Kilroy" presenter Robert Kilroy-Silk to 'structure and signpost' the course of discussion in every episode and making the size of the show's audience and number contributors more flexible.

The price isn't right
Article Abstract:
Independent television production companies in the UK are planning to seek a larger share of the financial benefits that terrestrial broadcasters receive from their shows. The producers are seeking a deal that pays them commercial prices for programmes, reflecting a show's success in the ratings, rather than the traditional 'cost-plus' system that currently operates and which pays producers the cost of production plus a fee.
