Anatomy of a hit
Article Abstract:
An analysis of how the ratings battle has evolved since "Broadcast" started to collate seasonal Top 50 series charts in 1984 is discussed. Every four months for 14 years, the ratings battle on the Top 50 charts has been fought by broadcasters BBC 1 and ITV. In 1997, however, United Films and Televisions surfaced as a sizeable player in the ratings war, joining Scottish and driving the outer ring of ITV stations to over one-tenth of the Top 50 for the first time in 14 years. The analysis also showed that the Top 50's TVR, the percentage of the entire British populations that viewed a typical episode of a show, has slowly plunged.
