MacKenzie in fight for Talk

Kelvin MacKenzie will head a consortium that will bid for the 63.2% stake in national station Talk Radio held by Luxembourg-based media group CLT-Ufa. News International, the UK unit of Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, reported on Jun. 9, 1998, the company will acquire a 20% interest in MacKenzie's consortium, the maximum permitted under the present cross-media ownership measures. Other entities that are reported to be involved with the consortium of MacKenzie include Apax Partners, a venture capitalist, and MVI, which already holds a 34.8% interest in Talk Radio.

Radio 3 unveils autumn season

BBC Radio 3 (R3) will introduce a number of new programs for its 1998 fall season, a move that comes a week after Matthew Bannister, BBC Broadcast director, belied rumors of a downgrading of the radio station. The new season will commence with "Danube Week," on the weekend of Sep. 12, 1998, to Sep. 13, 1998, featuring seven days of culture and music from Austria and Hungary. The other new programs slated for the autumn of 1998 include Best of 3, CD Review, Lunchtime Concerts from Wigmore Hall, International Young Artists, Man and Boy, Hedda Gabler and Naked.

Capital Radio has announced that it is to buy a 90.1% share of alternative London rock station XFM, for a total price of 15.9 million pounds sterling. Similarly, Capital is also paying 18.25 million pounds for Touch Radio AM and Red Dragon FM in Cardiff. The acquisitions are subject to watchdog approval. According to group programme director at Capital Radio, Richard Park, Capital is pursuing an expansion drive.
