Maoism vs. media in the marketplace
Article Abstract:
Sweeping economic reforms in China has led to the opening up of its mass media which was unthinkable of some years ago, but it is likely to fall prey to strict policies of government. Media control in China was adopted from Russia in the 1950s, giving power to 'Party branches'. The State General Publishing Administration oversees the print media. Increasing advertising income has revolutionized media programming. The government is trying to check the influence of foreign satellite programmes. Decreasing financial control over media has helped it grow as an independent entity.

President Slobodan Milosevic stifles dissent by challenging privatization laws and manipulating the circulation of the independent dailies.
