No soft touch
Article Abstract:
The new Radio 106 FM commercial radio station based in Nottingham, England, is expected to go on air in Autumn 1997 despite a number of setbacks. The station has a strong soft rock and speech format targeted at regional listeners aged 35 to 55, and a number of experienced presenters have been appointed. Radio 106 FM is expected to attract a number of listeners away from BBC stations, particularly Radio 4, Radio 2 and local BBC stations. Radio 106 FM aims to attract 11% of the 1.5 million local listeners in the initial year, with a 15% reach ultimately anticipated.

Contracting out
Article Abstract:
Groups including the National Union of Journalists, the Society of Authors, the Independent Association of Radio Producers and Equity have formed an alliance which aims to oppose the terms of the BBC's new radio contracts. Independent producers are now being requested to provide programming which is fully cleared in perpetuity. This has a negative impact on existing agreements between the BBC and trade organisations, according to the alliance, and is unfair to producers.
