Peaky primetime
Article Abstract:
Peaktime programmes are still an important way for UK television broadcasters to attract audiences, even though social and cultural changes might have been expected to distribute television viewing more evenly throughout the day. The anticipated fragmentation of audiences has not really happened, with ITV and BBC continuing to dominate television broadcasting, despite the arrival of non-terrestrial broadcasters. However, genres which have in the past made a significant contribution to the dominance of peaktime broadcasting seem to be losing popularity. This is particularly the case for situation comedies and feature films.

ITV's cold summer
Article Abstract:
Television ratings for the UK's 1997 summer season reveal that viewers watched 28 minutes more of satellite television than they did of ITV and BBC. This has been helped by the increase in sports viewed on satellite channels. ITV is losing its daytime viewers with 31.2% of the audience share, compared to the BBC's 33%. However, during the evening, ITV won the ratings battle 80 nights out of 126. The BBC is turning to its stable of docudramas such as Driving School and Children's Hospital to add viewers less expensively than making real dramas.
