Preserving Wales
Article Abstract:
Regional TV output in Wales by specialist broadcasters HTV and BBC Wales totalled more than 1,300 hours in 1994. Welsh broadcasting is dominated by Welsh-language broadcaster S4C, said to be the most expensive channel in the world, with a government subsidy of 63 million pounds sterling in 1995. Its most successful show is soap opera Pobol y Cwm, supplied by the BBC. There are several Welsh independents supplying programmes to S4C, including Ffilmiau'r Nant and Gaucho. Local program producers find it difficult to sell nationally because of the misconception that Welsh programs are either about rugby or coal-mines.
