The sporting authorities have increasing opportunities to gain revenue and exposure with the number of new television channels coming on stream. Rugby League has already benefited from a cash injection from BSkyB. ITV recognised that sports rights are important to growth, but it does not currently have the finance or slots available. Football contracts are also vital and the amount of televised live football has increased with the arrival of Sky Sports.

ITV challenge for Premier League footie
Article Abstract:
Granada, holder of the ITV franchise for the north-west, is thought to be considering linking with BSkyB to bid for the rights to cover Premier League football from 1997, when the current BBC/BSkyB contract expires. This may lead to football coverage moving back to ITV, or possibly to Channel 5, for which a bid has recently been made by Granada and BSkyB.

ITC threat to ITV over religious coverage
Article Abstract:
TheIndependent Television Commission has threatened action over ITV's attitude to religousprogramming. The Commission feels that religious shows have been removed from peak timeand marginalised. ITV has launched several magazine style religous programmes, but theCommission believes the shows are lacking in imagination.
