Public enemies
Article Abstract:
The American Congress is becoming increasingly opposed to federal funding of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and parent company the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). The CPB is surprised by the ferocity of attacks by some politicians who claim PBS is a toy for rich people. The CPB claims public television receives under $300 million annually from the federal government, which is a comparatively small amount. British television production will also be impacted by reduced funding, with PBS often used for British programmes to gain entry into the American television market.

Never-ending stories
Article Abstract:
There are still significant differences between the US and the UK in approaches to television drama, although common areas are now emerging, according to Delia Fine, vice-president of film drama and performing arts at A and E Television Networks. UK drama is beginning to be a bit more fast moving, in the style of US drama, and there is a growing tendency to layer stories into hour-long episodes. There is increasing interest in costume drama in the US, where the craft of British drama has long been admired.

Blunt implement: the US entertainment has opted for self-regulation rather than having a code for the V-chip imposed on it
Article Abstract:
In the US the re-regulated Telecommunications Bill has been signed, incorporating V-chip legislation, although the entertainment business believes that the government should not interfere with voluntary industry ratings. The Implementation Group (IG), incorporating the MPAA, the National Association of Broadcasters, the National Cable Television Association and Hollywood studios and TV networks, aims to attach MPAA-like ratings to US TV shows.
