Faltering flicks
Article Abstract:
UK viewing figures for blockbuster movies shown on television are falling, with blame laid on schedules, availability of video and satellite television, and the lack of bankable young stars. Average film television audiences fell by 8% to 8.85 million for the top 50 films from 1993 to 1997. The only film to achieve over 15 million viewers during 1994-1997 was Jurassic Park shown on Christmas Day in 1996. Audiences are choosing to watch alternative programmes rather than films at an average rate of 4% a year since 1990, reducing the top 50 films audience share from 44% to 40% by 1996-7.

In the 1980s the television company supplied light entertainment, drama, sport and politics and culture. In the 1990s light entertainment productions are not gaining support and the company has not had many successes with new programming.

Playing to the crowd: after only one year in operation Carlton was hauled over the coals by the ITC and has been constantly castigated by the critics for appealing to the lowest common denominator
Article Abstract:
Carlton Television was seen as a poor substitute when it replaced Thames in 1993 and it was even criticised by the Independent Television Commission for its lack of distinctive or high quality works. However the company is gradually increasing its presence in primetime viewing and expects to be more visible in 1996 with new drama and comedy programmes.
