Television executives from more than 90 countries will attend Mipcom '96, and the toughest operators in the distribution business are to be found in the US. US companies are best placed to make the most of opportunities because of their marketing skills. Saban International president Stan Golden believes that a multi-skilled strategy is need for selling today, and senior vice-president of Columbia TriStar John McMahon believes that distributors have to be innovative in the way they sell their catalogues to buyers.

Out-Foxed: Flextech pulling out of talks to sell half of children's channel TCC to Fox has created new doubts about the future of the service in a crowded kids' market

Flextech has decided to withdraw from talks to sell 50% of TCC, its children's channel, to Fox Kids Network (FKN) and Saban Entertainment, its international partner. Flextech could seek an alternative partner, such as MCA/Universal. FKN's arrival in the UK as part of the Sky Multi-Channels (SMC) package, will affect TCC's market share, and Flextech may reposition TCC to pre-school and teen programming.

An outline agreement gives Channel 5 Broadcasting access to the BBC's television archive. C5B will purchase a significant amount of programming during its 10 year licence period, particularly drama and children's programmes. The BBC had previously refused to sell its archive programming to Channel 4, and claims it has the right to choose who it sells programming to.
