Article Abstract:
An initial inspection of light entertainment television programming in the UK seems to indicate that formats have changed very little for many years. However, it is important to realise that the genre has in fact seen significant changes since the early 1980s, and that there has been considerable innovation. Indeed, the British entries for the 1997 Montreux television festival awards highlight the very positive state of modern light entertainment television broadcasting in the UK.

Article Abstract:
Television news broadcasting in the UK is extremely competitive, and this presented many challenges for staff at Channel 5 News. They were determined to present a young, alternative image, but also wanted to compete with mainstream news broadcasting. The initial reaction to Channel 5's approach to news broadcasting was reasonably positive, and launching during the run-up to the general election gave the news team the opportunity to establish its credibility very quickly.
