Article Abstract:
The Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics (Siggraph) holds its annual convention at the Los Angeles Convention Centre from 3-8 August, 1997. The occasion will offer the world's top 3D animators the chance to see a new generation of animation software. Among those exhibiting at Siggraph will be Alias/Wavefront and Softimage, both aiming to create 'next-generation' software products. Alias/Wavefront's Maya software is scheduled for release in early 1998, while the first products in Softimage's Sumatra package will be available from the second quarter of 1997.

Windows NT holds sway at Siggraph
Article Abstract:
There were more than 110 exhibitors at the 1996 Siggraph computer graphics show displaying computers or graphics software designed to use the Windows NT operating system, according to Microsoft. Silicon Graphics is currently the leading supplier of computers to the animation and effects industries, but its position is being increasingly challenged by Windows NT. A number of companies launched high performance NT workstations at Siggraph.

Sony set to name partners at NAB
Article Abstract:
Sony aims to boost its hardware with third party software through a number of strategic alliances. These will be announced at the NAB technology show in Apr 1997. This move has been prompted by the company's decision to make its SX compression chip set available to other manufacturers. Observers feel that Avid Technology is a particularly likely partner for Sony, as it has expertise in developing user interfaces and graphics software.
