Six ratings that will change TV
Article Abstract:
The US television broadcasting industry has decided to adopt a six-category on-screen rating system, rather than face the risk of having a regulatory structure imposed upon it. Stations will carry one of six symbols in the corner of the screen at the start of all programmes, except news and sport. The symbol will indicate whether the material is suitable for children. Some observers feel that the symbols lack detail and that advertisers may be unwilling to be associated with programmes which are rated as being suitable only for adults.

Born-again CBS bouncing back
Article Abstract:
US television broadcaster CBS has finally begun to perform well after failing to win any significant contracts since 1994. Its recent acquisition of prime-time broadcasting contracts has boosted confidence within the company. It has agreed to pay channel NBC Today's popular programme presenter Bryant Gumbel 3.1 million pounds sterling in a five-year contract to attract audiences. Its aims to attract viewers of between 25 and 50 years of age.
