Microsoft Corp. is set to launch its MSN online service in seven countries, including the UK, where the service will be available from February 1997. The new online service will comprise six themed channels, accessible via the Internet and offering programs ranging from news to games shows. For TV producers used to conventional linear programming and wishing to be involved in the new non-linear field, their programs must be short, well presented, interactive and entertaining . Multimedia facilities specialist Cognitive Applications has been involved in the field for around 10 years.

BSC warns against dive downmarket for ratings
Article Abstract:
Broadcasters have been warned by the Broadcasting Standards Council (BSC) not to move downmarket in order to gain audience ratings but to focus on decency and taste. The number of complaints handled by the BSC increased 31% to 2,247 in the year to 31 March 1995, although the number upheld by the BSC fell to 20% from 29% in the previous year. Nearly 50% of the complaints involved decency and taste, with 33% of these involving complaints about bad language. Complaints about violence accounted for 13% of all complaints, while complaints about sex accounted for 26%.
