The dragon roars
Article Abstract:
S4C, the first dedicated Welsh language television station, began broadcasting in Nov 1982. Since then, it has won a wide range of awards, and now broadcasts around 33 hours a week of Welsh language programming. It is mainly funded from public resources, and this means that it must be strongly committed to offering diversity and choice in broadcasting in Wales. It is mainly providing a service for Wales, but is also keen to offer an international outlook.

S4C's programme for success
Article Abstract:
Welsh language television broadcaster S4C is aware that it must offer a very diverse schedule, as it faces competition from the BBC and ITV for mainly bilingual audiences. It is keen to ensure that it is not too parochial, and mixes Welsh-interest programmes with programmes designed to attract wider audiences. It is strongly committed to innovation, and realizes the importance of establishing close relationships with independent programme producers.
