The material needed to make the British Broadcasting Corporation Ltd programme 'People's Century' came from 300 archives but the programme, which cost 10 million pounds in production, has been sold to 35 nations. Archive libraries charge a transfer free for putting material onto VHS cassettes and a usage rate by the second or minute. Archivists prefer researchers to make personal contact, in order to ascertain their requirements. Libraries have had difficulty in transferring their material onto the most useful formats for customers. Many have index systems on computer and some have web sites.
