Toward civic-minded media
Article Abstract:
US Senator Bill Bradley believes that censorship battles should not be the focus of interactions between the US Congress and media organizations. Television and other media should be focusing on promoting citizenship and civic responsibility instead of providing violent programming. The media should not focus solely on politics at its most divisive and characterize public officials as completely self-interested. More balanced coverage of politics would promote public interest in politics and civic responsibility.

Unfortunate stupidity: relations between the news media and the military are still poisoned by the memory of Tet
Article Abstract:
The 1968 Tet Offensive by the North and South Vietnamese communist forces was a big story which the media inflated further. That military attack may have shocked the world but had been anticipated by the US forces since 1967. Yet the media reported only on the Viet Cong attacks rather than the success stories of the US army that were linked to the offensive. A carefully researched book on the Tet campaign shows that the press misinformed the nation about the meaning of every aspect of the offensive.

Are the media still American?
Article Abstract:
America's dominance in world media will decline when pitted against the growth of world media. Although the two largest American media offerings, namely, news services and Hollywood, remain strong, leadership in news service is shared with Britain while Hollywood has become less American. The development of the information superhighway by US, Europe and Japan will also reduce the gap between American and world media.
