Bland defend PSB role in digital age
Article Abstract:
BBC chairman Sir Christopher Bland has defended the persisting need for public service broadcasters (PSBs) in the era of digital television. Speaking at the Public Service Broadcasters' International Forum in Biarritz, Bland reported that PSBs will play an important role in digital television, and that they function as shields against a prospective flurry of cheap acquired programming. Although he noted that market influences spawned programs and services that are dull, unwilling to take risks and serve only the majority, Bland also emphasized that PSBs should not be limited to offering shows that will not appeal to commercial television broadcasters.
