Worldwide gears up for the global game
Article Abstract:
BBC Worldwide must constantly evolve in order to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing technological marketplace, according to deputy director general Bob Phillis. It has now become a significant operation, distributing 15,000 hours of programmes to more than 80 countries in 1996. It has a wide range of activities, but efforts are now being made to give these a strong central focus. It is moving towards an integrated approach to exploiting BBC brands, and its new structure will make it flexible and responsive.

The digital reality
Article Abstract:
Sky Digital has been launched in the UK, however, there are few new programs on offer on BSkyB or On Digital television. Programming is largely expected to feature sport, films, archive-based and repeat programming. Independents have been offering a variety of programme proposals to new digital channels, with Lion TV recently awarded a 870,000 pound sterling contract for 'Backstage' for BBC Choice.
