Middle East service to cut 120 jobs
Article Abstract:
Middle East Broadcasting Centre (MBC) of London, UK, will terminate the services of 120 workers, representing about 25% of its current workforce. The company, which provides news and entertainment programs in Arabic to clients in the Middle East, Europe and North Africa, has attributed the layoffs on the result of increasing competition with other Arabic satellite broadcasters. MBC staff, over 50% of whom are members of either the National Union of Journalists or Bectu, have expressed dissatisfaction over the proposed severance package, claiming that the company declined to negotiate.

BBC news center move hit by dispute
Article Abstract:
BBC News television producers are opposing a plan to join their radio counterparts at the newly constructed news center in west London, UK, in November 1998 to form a 15-strong bi-media news production team. TV news producers are in disagreement with management about working conditions at the new facility. They said that a shift to bi-media production will result in an intolerable raise in nighshifts and weekend working. The producers also expressed concern that the new working patterns will result in job cuts.
