World Service seeks new fund
Article Abstract:
BBC World Service, the overseas public service unit of BBC, is looking for new funds to finance the launch of a number of branded international TV news and current affairs programs in several countries. The new foreign-language programs of BBC World Service, which will appear on local TV channels, could take the form of daily slots with domestic news bulletins, 30-minute daily bulletins or 30-minute weekly current affairs shows. BBC World Service Managing Director Caroline Thomson noted Russia will be the first country that BBC World Service will target. Other markets being considered include Hungary, Latin America and the Far East.

BBC Choice unveils new children's shows
Article Abstract:
BBC Choice, the new digital service of BBC, is beginning its weekend programming for children and teenagers on Oct. 17, 1998. The shows to be aired include The Crew Room, which is targeted for children 8 to 10 years old, and Re-Peter, which will showcase the week's best of Blue Peter shown on BBC 1. The following day, BBC Choice will air Hype, a children's department show for 14- to 17-year-olds, featuring phone-ins, guests, showbiz talks, reviews and previews of films as well as its own house band. The show will also have the Do The Right Thing show to bring tips on fashion, lipstick and snogging.

Briffa to move in BBC Online rejig
Article Abstract:
BBC Online and interactive controller Ed Briffa has been removed from his post as part of a restructuring of the company's license fee-funded Internet operation. A spokesperson for BBC confirmed Briffa, who was appointed head of BBC Online in February 1997, is considering other senior management position within BBC's operations. The spokesperson also noted the restructuring move is designed to give better value for the license fee payer in its Online service, which BBC considered as the third broadcast medium.
