A famous name returns to sea
Article Abstract:
Ingalls Shipbuilding division of Litton Industries has delivered the sixth Wasp class multi-purpose amphibious assault ship to the US Navy, which commissioned the vessel as USS Bonhomme Richard. The 45,500 full-load Bonhomme Richard, which is second in size to the US Navy's aircraft carriers, is capable of inserting a 2,000-strong United States Marine Corps MEU (Marine Expedionary Unit) by helicopters and hovercraft. The ship is expected to carry a squadron of AV-8B Harrier jets, and a range of navy and Marine helicopters and amphibious vehicles. Featured in the Bonhomme Richard are C4I systems, medical facilities and numerous anti-air warfare armaments.

Boeing wins ATFLIR production contract
Article Abstract:
Boeing Co has received a $69-million contract from the US Navy (USN) for low-rate initial production of Advanced Targeting Forward-Looking Infrared systems (ATFLIR). The ATFLIR will employ third-generation midwave IR staring focal plane technology. It will combine into one the currently separate navigation and targeting FLIR pods. The ATFLIR is part of a joint USN and US Army parallel upgrades project called Hunter Stand-off Killer Team Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration.
