Cold War weapon or global deterrent?
Article Abstract:
The global political, economical and military status quo continue to be the major factors that foster the development and proliferation of strategic missile submarines (SSBNs), eversince the development of nuclear technology and weapons magnified following the second World War. The US, UK, Russia, France, China and other world powers, as well as developing countries, have spent hefty amounts of money to gain superiority, or maintain the capability, in the SSBN field. The effort to operate and improve the capabilities of each nations' SSBN fleet is seen as a potent way of preventing armed conflicts from triggering nuclear war, a purpose that assures the presence and significant use of SSBNs in the future.
