Question mark over shipyard as Type 45 goes ahead
Article Abstract:
Vosper Thornycroft of the UK is studying whether it will use its shipyard in Portsmouth rather than the one in Woolston to build Type 45 destroyers for the UK Royal Navy. In Jul 2000, the UK Ministry of Defense approved the procurement of three of the eventual 12 Type 45 destroyers. The prime contractor for the $1.5 billion contract is BAE Systems, which will oversee the construction of the first three destroyers.
