Countdown to war in Kashmir
Article Abstract:
A full-scale conventional war over the disputed state of Jammu and Kashmir is expected to flare up between India and Pakistan between Mar 2000 and roughly Jun 2000. Indian military leaders have reported that Islamic fundamentalists sponsored by Pakistan and the Taliban of Afghanistan have been waging an attack of infiltration since 1989 within the disputed state. India has therefore declared the conflict over Jammu/Kashmir as a limited war: restricted in duration and objectives to ensure that it remains below the nuclear threshold level, so that neither nation resorts to the use of nuclear weapons.

Palestinian pawns in a proxy war
Article Abstract:
Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon have become a controversial topic both domestically and internationally. The status of more than 367,000 Palestinian refugees residing in 12 camps in Lebanon is one of the main subjects that will be taken up negotiations between Isreal and the Palestinian Authority. There appears to be a power struggle going on for control of the refugee camps between members of the Fatah who support Palestinia Liberation Organization (PLO) chief Yassar Arafat, and an alliance of of Syrian-backed opposition groups. Fatah is the main faction of the PLO.

Algeria faces the challenge of peace
Article Abstract:
Algeria appears to be experiencing a significant change of direction politically. The Algerian Army has expressed a willingness to work with the civilian government to forge a peaceful settlement with Islamic militants and bring an end to an eight-year civil conflict which has killed at least 100,000 people. A number of developments between 1998 and 1999 suggest that the government of Pres Abdelaziz Bouteflika is genuinely seeking to build a democratic republic and a cohesive society.
