Editorial: the sting of battle

The US Marines have been involved in numerous battles during their history, but perhaps none were a greater challenge than the battle for Iwo Jima, during World War II. It is this battle that inspired the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington VA.

The history of the famous flag-raising on Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima, is described. The event signaled victory in the battle for the island, and resulted in one of the best-known photographs to emerge from World War II.
