Electric Boat's centennial
Article Abstract:
Electric Boat Corp was incorporated in Feb 1899 to build the first practical submarine named Holland after its inventor, John Phillip Holland. The firm delivered over 80 subamarines, overhauled 30 and built 550 ksubmarine chasers for UK during World War I. It delivered 74 submarines and built 28 more during World War I which accounted for 39% of all Japanese ships sunk. Electric Boat hopes to maintain its reputation for leadership as it begins another century in an industry characterized by innovation and high technology.

Leading the way in ship design
Article Abstract:
The San Antonio-class LPD 17 amphibious ship features advanced naval ship design and construction techniques that should make it apt for 21st century operational environment. The ship incorporates the capabilities of the ships that it will replace and meets the demands of the Navy and Marine Corps for a flexible, mission-capable platform for littoral environments. The 25,000-ton, twin-shaft, diesel-powered LPD 17 is also designed for a 40-year service life.
