FMTV: getting back on track
Article Abstract:
The US Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command has taken actions to make the family of medium tactical vehicles (FMTV) safer as a result of three different accidents linked to design problems in the driveline. An inspection of all light medium tactical vehicles was conducted and vehicle top speed was limited to 30 miles per hour. The main cause of the accidents was fatigue of the flywheel housing caused by vertical bending stresses in the power train. The required remedial action involves a retrofit of a new engine cradle support bracket and substitution of four universal joint kits with reinforced nylon thrust washers.
