Gen Gustav Hagglund, Commander-in-Chief of the Finnish Defense Forces, said Finland maintains a status of combat readiness that is adapted to the threats facing the country at any given time. Hagglund added that the Finnish armed forces maintains a real-time intelligence service and an efficient surveillance to increase its military readiness at any time. He also stated that Finland is upgrading three infantry brigades by increasing their mobility and firepower.

U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's has criticized Venezuela for purchasing Kalashnikovs for modernizing and replacing their existing inventory. The criticism of Venezuela and the decision to target it for U.S. vituperations and threats has reflected badly on the U.S., as Venezuela is the fifth largest producer of oil and the second-largest U.S. supplier.
