Fremantle replacement options under study
Article Abstract:
The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) has come up with a variety of options for the replacement of its Fremantle-class patrol boats under Project SEA 1444. This comes after the termination of the Offshore Patrol Combatant (OPC) project in 1997. The plans, together with the RAN's own suggestions, will be submitted to the high-level force structure committees in August 1998. Made to meet commercial standards in some aspects, the options differ in size from 35 to 55 m. Like the 15 Fremantle-class boats, the new class will be collectively mandated to offer 1,8000 sea days per annum.
