In a bid to balance the need for security against radiological attack, and the importance of maintaining the flow of legitimate commerce, the US Coast Guard is buying radiation-detection devices and funding detection research. A $7 million contract has been awarded to Thermo Electron Corp. for handheld radiation pagers and isotope identifiers and the ideal scenario envisaged is of intervention overseas when a ship is set to leave a port and travel to the US.

Dolphin power
Article Abstract:
The US Coast Guard's HH-65 Dolphin helicopters are all set to get new engines. The number of in-flight power failures have forced the service to scale back training, adapt operations and find funding to speed the planned re-engining. The Coast Guard and Deepwater Contractors Integrated Coast Guard Systems have agreed to move up the scheduled replacement of the service's replacement of the service's 95 HH-65 engines.
