Sen James M Inhofe has expressed plans to push for a budget increase in the new Congressional session to prevent any further decline in military capability. Inhofe chairs the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness and Management Support, which will conduct hearings aimed at establishing efforts for the FY2000 defense authorization bill. The panel envisions a reformed Pentagon with better business practices and financial planning to boost military spending.

The defense budget bills at year's end
Article Abstract:
President Clinton has signed the Fiscal 2000 defense appropriations legislation into law on Oct 25, 1999. The bill allocates $267.7 billion in funds for Defense Dept pay, purchases, and operations in FY2000. The amount, which was the first significant increase in defense budget in 14 years, has exceeded Clinton's original requests by $4.5 billion and the 1999 appropriations bill by $17.3 billion. Around $53 billion has been alloted for weapons procurement.

Defense money bill advances
Article Abstract:
The US Dept of Defense will receive a budget of $288 billion for FY 2001, an increase of almost $20 billion from the previous year's allocation and about $4 billion more that the amount requested from the US Congress by the Clinton Administration. The budget, approved by both Houses on Jul 13, 2000, included an increased allocation of almost $1 billion for the health care of the country's military personnel.
