The comparatively peaceful existence of Madedonia, since the breakup of Yugoslavia, has been nothing short of miraculous. However, the rise of the militant organization , the Albanian National Army, has begun to threaten that peace.

Macedonians form paramilitary groups in response to NLA insurgency
Article Abstract:
The military actions by the Albanian National Liberation Army in Macedonia led to increased resistance by Macedonian paramilitary groups. The fighting reached a peak in June 2001, and subsequent peace negotiations hold the hope for a settlement.

Macedonia peace deal falters amid war fears
Article Abstract:
Political unrest and violence continue in Macedonia, as three Macedonian police officers are killed in a grenade explosion following the arrest of several Albanian rebel fighters. It is hoped that the winter will prevent any serious resumption of fighting.
