Federal surplus musn't neglect defense
Article Abstract:
National policymakers must come to a realization that the armed services are not interest groups pursuing their own agendas but, rather, vital national institutions associated with the past and future success of the US. Little attention has been given by legislators to the need to use some of the nation's projected, massive revenue surplus to address the accumulating problems of a military that has been used too often, recapitalized too slowly and paid too little. Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid clearly deserve federal attention, but the government must also address the increasingly urgent needs of its armed forces if it desires to continue to effectively shape world events.

Kuwait and Iraq trip report
Article Abstract:
The awesome power and reach of the US in Kuwait is apparent but the process through which this power is funneled down directly to the individual soldier is unimpressive. Every activity in the Port of Kuwait and at the sprawling camps of Doha, Arifjan, Victory and Udairi is designed to support soldiers going into Iraq, serving in Iraq, and redeploying to the US.
