Defense Dept budget and strategy experts are preparing for an exercise that must be endured every four years: a sweeping assessment of the department's entire program. A new development has come up for the 2001 Quadrennial Defense Review that will kick off later in 2000. The Commission on National Security/21st Century (Hart-Rudman Commission) has issued a new blueprint outlining strategic interests that it believes should predicate the future US military position in the light of a new strategic environment.

Article Abstract:
The US Defence Department will reduce its workforce by 3,000 employees while the Joint Staff will be cut by 29% by the year 2003. Employees at defence agencies will be reduce by 21% and several military departments will be reduce by 10%. The planned redundancies of defence department employees is part of its plan to reduce the bureaucracy. However, long term implications of cutting the defence workforce may force the government to reevalute its plan.

The US Army is developing a new Strike Force concept as part of its reorganization of its heavy divisions. The Strike Force is defined as a middle-weight unit which can be swiftly deployed anywhere in the world within 96 hours. It is designed to conduct various missions such as confronting energy forces to humanitarian and peacekeeping operations. The Strike Force's command post will have exceptional capability and will be furnished with state-of-the art information systems which will enable commanders to perform mission planning and simulated rehearsals while being deployed towards its objective.
