Marinette Marine launched last two keeper tenders
Article Abstract:
Menominee, WI-based shipbuilder Marinette Marine Corp ended 1999 by launching the final two 175-ft Keeper-class coastal buoy tenders (WLMs) 'Henry Blake' and 'George Cobb.' WLM 5613 Henry Blake and WLM 5614 George Cobb were both christened and sidelaunched into the Menominee River, WI, within a month of each other. The new ships are the 13th and 14th of the Keeper-class. They feature Z-drive propulsion and integrated global positioning system/inertial navigation system units which enable them to maintain exact position while placing or retrieving navigational aids.

The fifth Watson

National Steel and Shipbuilding Co has built the Watson-class large, medium speed, roll-on/roll-off (LMSR) sealift ship 'Charlton' for the Military Sealift Command. The 950-ft, 62,000-ton, gas turbine engine- powered ship was christened at the company's shipyard in San Diego, CA, in 1999. It is the Military Sealift Command's fifth Watson-class LMSR. The Charlton, which can attain a speed of up to 24 knots, is designed to transport Army helicopters, armored vehicles and other military equipment in roughly 390,000 sq ft of space to potential crisis spots worldwide.

DDG Howard, LMSR Charlton christened; AGS to be named for oceanographer
Article Abstract:
Bath Iron Works Corp has built the 9,238-ton, 509-ft, Arleigh Burke-class Aegis guided missile destroyer (DDG) 'Howard' for the Navy. The ship was christened at the company's shipyard in Bath, ME, in 1999. It is the 33rd of 51 planned Arleigh Burke-class DDGs and the 19th built by Bath Iron Works. The Howard is scheduled to be commissioned in 2001, with its home port being in San Diego, CA. Commodore Joseph F. Nolan is the prospective commanding officer of the ship and her crew of 340 officers and enlisted personnel.
