The Falklands campaign: the British reconquest and the Argentine defense
Article Abstract:
The US could, at some time in the future, experience a crisis akin to that which the UK encountered in recapturing the Falkland Islands from Argentina. Thus, the Falklands campaign carries a number of useful lessons for the US Navy and Marine Corps. One, tactical surprise can still be achieved by an amphibious force even in an era of sophisticated detection equipment. Two, helicopters are critical in modern amphibious landings. Three, ships are vulnerable even to limited shore defenses. Four, even conventional submarines can threaten an amphibious task force and its sea lines of communication. Five, the number of close-in defense systems on warship, amphibious craft and supply ships must be increased.
