The U.S. maritime industry: quo vadis?
Article Abstract:
The US maritime industry, specifically its US-flag merchant marine and shipbuilding and repair components, is in a state of decline. The US merchant marine service, long a symbol of US vitality and innovation, has control of only about 3% of the country's seaborne foreign trade. US shipyards, which have undergone a period of consolidation, are also experiencing economic hardships as funding for the construction of naval warships continue to be contrained.
