The winner of the US Marine Corps' Expeditionary Fire Support System (EFSS) competition announced in October 2004 was a mortar system put forward by General Dynamics and Ordnance and Tactical System (GDOTS), which had been competing against United Defense. GDOTS based its winning EFSS solution on the compact Growler vehicle.

Ericsson modifies Giraffe AMB to counter incoming mortar fire

Ericsson Microwave Systems at Gothenburg, Sweden has developed a 360-degree mortar alert and locating functionality for its Giraffe AMB (agile multibeam) truck-mounted surveillance and target indication radar. This new feature would aim primarily at enhancing force protection during expeditionary operations.
