Phantom flier
Article Abstract:
The US Air Force Air Combat Command and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency are developing an expendable and low cost decoy called Miniature Air-Launched Decoy (MALD). The decoys are expected to confuse enemy radars, command and control networks and help in the suppression of antiaircraft missile sites. The Miniature Air-Launched Decoy works by duplicating the radar signature of conventional aircraft and by flying with the same speed, altitude and formation.

Air warriors at risk
Article Abstract:
The availability of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as replacements, not as mere alternatives, to manned combat aircraft is already a reality. Technology exists for UAVs that are able to conduct all roles currently done by manned aircraft. These include reconnaissance, suppression of enemy air defenses, bombing and air-to-air combat. The technology has also been extended to the design of an arsenal ship that can effectively replace the US Navy's carrier battle group.

Selecting UAV pilots: US military services differ in crew selection for unmanned aerial vehicle operations
Article Abstract:
The different branches of the US armed forces use different criteria and personnel grades to choose unmanned aerial vehicle crews. The Army has created a new specialist rating for UAV pilots, while the Navy uses enlisted personnel with private pilot licenses and the Air Force insists on using pilot-qualified officers and navigators, a policy it is reviewing.
