Pragmatism in practice: CFE seeks to secure Europe's future
Article Abstract:
The adaptation agreement for the Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) Treaty was signed by 30 nations on Nov 19, 1999. The event updates the treaty, originally signed on Nov 19, 1990, which was responsible for equalizing the conventional weapon arsenals of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the Warsaw Pact nations. The importance of the treaty for the stability of Europe is highlighted by the fact that it has survived the breakup of the Soviet Union, the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact and the Bosnian conflict.

Claims to the Caspian Sea
Article Abstract:
The Caspian Sea holds one of the world's oldest and potentially richest oil and gas undersea fields and, as such, has therefore become the focus of international attention with regards to its jurisdiction. The Caspian lies at the very core of one of the world's most significant and sensitive areas, with the Caucasus region to the west, Iran and the Middle East to the south, Central Asia to the east. Five littoral states are scrambling to secure access to the Caspian, which is also a geopolitically strategic region.
