The development of armor materials
Article Abstract:
Protection against small-arms bullets, explosive shell and charge-type warheads was formerly, offered by providing thick steel plates to prevent perforation of the vehicle platform. By the 1960s, it was recognized that there was a limit to the amount of steel armor that could be applied to an Armored Fighting Vehicle (AFV) and since ideally the armor system had to be as light as possible, alternative materials were sought and Ceramic-faced armors are commonly used in the 21st century aircraft.
