RAMICS to take to the air
Article Abstract:
The US Navy's Rapid Airborne Mine Clearance System (RAMICS) is based on a Light Detection & Ranging System (LIDAR) and a standard machine gun firing supercavitating projectiles to combat surface and near-surface mines. RAMICS became the subject of a $15-million Advanced Technology Demonstration (ATD) program managed by the Office of Naval Research, under which it will be fired from a Mk 197 machine gun. The helicopter-borne system, which utilizes a specially-developed 20mm munition, likewise utilizes a modified version of the fire control computer from the US Navy's Phalanx Close-in Weapon System (CWIS). The supercavitating projectiles uses highly-reactive lithium perchlorate to destroy the mine. Raytheon Company is the prime contractor for RAMICS.
